The 8-hour program will introduce the student to the methodology of conducting a vessel fuel inventory. Designed for those who have little or no previous experience performing surveys of this type, the program will be presented by an instructor who is an extremely experienced and practicing bunker surveyor in an easy-to-understand format. Using surveys and publications collected from actual vessels attended by the instructor, attention will be directed toward practical survey methodology. Throughout the entire course, the student can expect to be challenged with real-life scenarios while acquiring the fundamental skills necessary to accurately determine the quantity of fuel aboard a ship, specifically:
(1) Fuel tank measurement techniques
(2) Projecting onboard fuel quantity using consumption rates
(3) Application of fuel tank volume tables / application of mathematical corrections
(4) Deciphering unusual vessel tank data
(5) Avoiding common errors
The course will focus on the metric system of measurement. Upon request, the imperial system will be addressed.
Class is presented as two (2) each 4-hour sessions with homework assignments at the conclusion of each. The instructor will remain online as needed at the end of each session to answer questions or review.
No final exam will be administered although the student can expect to be challenged throughout the entire program during class and written assignments between classroom sessions. This course is typically approved for CE credits by the International Institute of Marine Surveyors (IIMS), National Association of Marine Surveyors (NAMS) and the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS). All of these organizations require an application for approval for each course which will be processed at the request of the student.
